A Plea For High Meadows

High Meadows is a treatment facility in Hamden that is being shut down.    The governor's office says in extremely difficult economic times, the state must save everywhere it can, without hurting state residents.  High Meadows treats young males between twelve and twenty years of age.

In Hartford Friday, state lawmakers, advocates, union officials and staff testified before the Office of Health Care Access.  They said High Meadows is the only place in the state where a child who does not meet a level of computable treatment can go to as a last resort.  They said that many children reach a point where they no longer need Riverview Hospital in Middletown, for example, but they still have acute symptoms that cannot be treated in any of the other resources in the state other than High Meadows because High Meadows has licensed staff around the clock.

The governor's office and the Department of Children And Families say the treatment available at the other state facilities is so vastly improved, the state can afford to shut down High Meadows.
