Baby Found Wandering Shoeless in Frigid Weather

Dad charged with risk of injury.

A Hamden dad has been arrested after his 1-year-old son was found wandering, with no shoes, in 35-degree weather on the family’s street.

The child, who is 1 year, 9 months old, was wandering on High Top Circle around noon on Wednesday.

Flurries were falling at the time and the boy was wearing only pajamas, no shoes or socks, police said. A resident who saw the boy outside called police and said a car almost hit the baby.

His diaper was soiled with recent and dried up feces, police said.

Fire Rescue personnel determined that the child needed medical attention and an ambulance transported the child to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

The Department of Children and Families was also contacted.

Police located the child’s father, Adrian Nelson, 23, who said he laid down to take a nap with his son at 10 a.m. When he woke up, his son was missing.

Nelson was charged with risk of injury to a minor and released after posting a $1,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on April 6.
