Beware the Grinch

Thieves targetting holiday gifts

The gifts are beginning to fill up under the tree. There are twelve shopping days until Christmas. That means time is running out to buy flat screen TVs, blue ray players or even a special piece of jewelry. The only problem is, thieves know that too.

Middletown police say that there has been a rise in burglaries with thieves targeting some of these holiday presents.

Ron Andrews of New Britain experienced it first hand. He told NBC Connecticut, “recently a TV was stolen from my house, somebody broke in and took the TV.”

Police are recommending that people record the serial number of all big purchases. Police say that will make it easier to locate stolen good. Police also are telling people to take pictures of their jewelry.

“I’ve always done that,” said Bob Sulik of New Britain. “I just write in down, just in case cause you never know.”

Thieves often target cars, so police are also telling people to take all items of value out of their vehicles.

“I think people are desperate,” said shopper Susan Moore. “The economy is tough and people are struggling and desperate.”
