Heidi Alves, 26, and her family and friends might have their best Christmas ever. The Torrington woman became the latest winner of the Connecticut lottery's Win for Life game on Monday.
She picked up her first $5,000 check at Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill on Monday. Alves will receive a $5,000 check every month for the rest of her life.
She bought the ticket this weekend and said she was in disbelief. Alves even went back to the package store where she bought the ticket to make sure it was legitimate.
"I asked the guy, 'Did I win $5,000?'" Alves said. "He said 'No.' and I said 'No?'and he said 'You just won $5,000 for the rest of your life.' I said 'What! For the rest of my life? Until I die.'"
Alves and her husband intend on keeping their jobs. The couple lives with Alves' mother and the extra money will allow her mother to retire, Alves said.
