Parishioner Pocketed Millions from Church: FBI

An Easton man is accused of embezzling millions from a church in Orange and using some of it to fund a car racing business.

The FBI arrested Gregory Loles, 50, and took him into custody on Tuesday morning.

Church leaders from St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church reported last week that money was missing and held an emergency meeting for members. At the time, they declined to identify who they thought was responsible for the theft.

Easton is accused of taking more than $2 million from three parishioners and probably more from the church, the New Haven Register reports, citing the church’s attorney and federal court documents.

Loles is charged with mail and wire fraud and FBI officials said he used some of the stolen money for his car racing business, Farnbacher-Loles Motor Sports, a high-performance car racing team based in Danbury, the Register reports.

Loles had managed the church's building fund, which included millions raised from the congregation.
