Restaurant Gives Back to Japan

A West Hartford restaurateur is reaching out a helping hand to the struggling millions in his native Japan

Umi Sushi, in West Hartford, said the restaurant will hold a fundraiser on Sunday, March 20 and 100 percent of sales will go toward the American Red Cross relief effort in the earthquake-ravaged country.

Taki Tanaka, the general manager, grew up near the earthquake zone. His mother lives in Soma, one of hardest hit areas, only about 25 miles from the nuclear plant. She's been in Tokyo since the quake.

He has made contact with his family in Japan.

The fundraiser runs all day, from 11:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 53 Isham Road in Blue Back Square.
