Darien Teen Dies During Swim Meet Trip

Residents said he had been running on a treadmill.

A Darien high school freshman died Friday night while traveling with his family in Boston.

Victor "Andy" Peña was in Massachusetts to attend a swim meet, the Darien Times reports.

Darien residents told to the Times that Andy was running on a treadmill on Friday evening at a hotel when he collapsed and later died.

Andy was on the Darien High School swim team and it is not clear if he was traveling to compete or whether he was attending his younger brother's middle school swim meet. Andy was also involved with the Fairfield County Swimming League.

“It is with much sadness that I am writing to inform you that Andy Peña, a 9th grade student at Darien High School passed away Friday night,” Dan Haron, principal of Darien High School, wrote on the school’s web site.  “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Peña family at this time of sadness and grief over the loss of a beloved member of the DHS community.”

A student crisis team met on Saturday and counselors and psychologists will be working at two support centers throughout the day on Monday for any student who needs support.
