Fire Destroys Newington Business

Over 75 firefighters from five towns battled an early morning blaze for several hours Sunday that shut down a portion of the Berlin Turnpike and destroyed a kitchen supply store.

Crews from Berlin, Wethersfield, Cromwell, Rocky Hill and Newington were called in to battle the blaze, which began shortly before 4 a.m. at Express Kitchen, said fire officials.

Firefighters extinguished  the fire just before 8 a.m. and crews remained on scene for most of the day to handle hot spots. No one was hurt or injured.

The mix of wind, rain and fog and the potential of the roof collapsing made the fire difficult to extinguish, according to fire officials.

Castle: The Window People; a siding, roofing and window business located next to Express Kitchen, was also damaged by the fire.

The other Castle store locations will handle the orders and workload for the Newington store, which will be closed for repairs, according to Rod Arce, vice president of operations at Castle.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
