51 People Displaced by Fire

An early morning fire Sunday displaced 51  residents at an apartment complex in West Haven.

The fire began at an apartment complex at 10 Highland St. shortly before 5:30 a.m. said Red Cross officials. Officials said they know where the fire started but they are trying to determine what caused it.

Twenty-three units inside the complex were affected by the fire, which caused 51 residents to be displaced due to the heavy smoke, according to Red Cross officials.

The residents were aided by the West Haven Fire Department and the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross provided residents with comfort kits and financial aid for food.

The Red Cross opened a service center along Whitney Avenue in New Haven on Sunday to aid the families that required further assistance. Residents might be able to return home by the end of the week.
