NJ Man Charged with Berlin Arson

Berlin Police have charged a 20-year-old New Jersey man with arson after he allegedly a porch fire that displaced three people and killed a dog on New Year's Eve.

Stephen Brummell of Woolrich, NJ was charged with Arson, Reckless Burning, Criminal Mischief and Reckless Endangerment Friday after he caused a fire at 93 Hudson Street just after 12:00 a.m., said Detective Sergeant John McCormack.

The fire spread from the porch to the home, causing significant damage. All three family members of the home were displaced and the family dog was killed, said McCormack.

McCormack describes Brummell as an acquaintance of one of the family members at the home, but could not comment further on the events that led up to the alleged arson.  

Brummell remains in the custody of the Berlin Police Department where he is being held on a $250,000 bond.

He is scheduled to appear at New Britain Superior Court on Monday, January 4.
