New London Police Critically Wound Suspect

A New Haven man is in critical condition after a New London police officer shot and injured him on Wednesday afternoon, according to State Police.

The call initially came in as a carjacking after the suspect stole an ice box truck, detectives said.  The truck flipped moments later at the intersection of Bank and Jefferson streets.

Officers surrounded the truck before firing multiple shots through the windshield, hitting the suspect several times.

"The suspect made a furtive movement in the interior of the truck causing the officer to discharge the service weapon," said Lt. Paul Vance, State Police spokesman.

The suspect is a New Haven resident believed to be in his 20s. State Police are now handling the investigation.
