Steps Taken for Safer Shopping

After fist fights and thefts, The Westfield Connecticut Post Mall is looking at ways to crack down on crime.

The Milford shopping plaza has already reduced its bus schedule in hopes of curbing crime problems on the weekends.

The mall is hoping fewer troublemakers coming off the bus will translate to fewer crimes.

“The mall was having problem on Saturday and Friday nights with teens, so they’re hoping this will curb the violence,” said David Lee, General Manager for Connecticut Transit.

Just a week into the new schedule, the mall is still having problems.

Last Saturday an officer took a chair to the head while trying to break up a fight.

In a separate incident, 20 minutes earlier, police arrested a 17-year-old for threatening a woman with a gun.

That’s part of the reason shoppers like Ralph Cimino of Branford want the mall needs a better plan.

“In this economy it’s probably not a good choice,” Cimino said.

The mall plans to hire off duty police officers and install surveillance cameras to increase security.
