An Old Saybrook woman was almost hit by a bullet while she was doing dishes at her kitchen sink.
Police said her neighbor, John Patrick Kelly, 45, fired a .40 calliber handgun inside his house at 37 Attawanahood Trail.
The bullet came through the victim's window, pierced a solid wood cabinet and a stainless steel sink, police said. The woman was not injured.
Kelly has been charged with carrying a firearm while under the influence of liquor or drugs, unlawful discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment.
Police said they seized seven weapons, including a .40 caliber handgun, several magazines fully loaded with ammunition and an assault weapon.
According to court testimony, Kelly is a former New Haven police officer and was cleaning his gun while drunk when it discharged.
Kelly is on probation after being charged with evading and was finishing a substance abuse program, according to court testimony.
He is being held on bond. It was increased from $50,000 to $75,000.
Old Saybrook Police are still on scene investigating.
