Pelosi, Longtime Critic of China, Arrives in Shanghai

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a fierce critic of China, arrived in Shanghai Sunday ahead of an energy and climate change forum this week.

The top House Democrat, who has been a vocal critic of the nation's rule over Tibet and its human rights record, is slated to attend an energy forum in Beijing on Tuesday with Sen. John Kerry, AFP reported.

Pelosi arrived in Shanghai today but no details were made available on who the Speaker was going to meet with there, the agency reported.

The lawmaker declined to say whether she would press Beijing on human rights issues as the 20th anniversary of Tiananmen Square approaches.

"The purpose of this trip is to follow up on meeting we've had here with the representatives of the Chinese government on the subject of climate change and energy and how that relates to our economy," she said.

Pelosi said "freedom-loving people" across the globe should "speak out against China's oppression in Tibet" in March last year when protests against China's rule over Tibet erupted.
