MTA App for That

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is on a quest for an app.

The MTA is asking tech savvy travelers to help create a software application to improve the travel experience for customers of New York's subways, buses, railroads, bridge and tunnels.  The grand prize winner of the MTA App Quest competition will take home $5,000.  "Over the past two years, we've made more and more information available to app developers, and we're thrilled that they're taking this information and using it to benefit our customers," said MTA Chairman Jay H. Walder.

The MTA released new data sets including historical data like the times and locations of trains, shapes of bus routes, locations of outside retailers who sell E-ZPasses and elevator and escalator data.

Submissions are due by September 26, 2011.  Winners will be announced in November.
