There Goes Another Job – and Another

States unemployment rate has reached 7.1 percent

If it feels like the economy is getting worse, it’s because it is. As of December, Connecticut’s  unemployment rate has reached 7.1 percent amid the deepening national recession.

The state Department of Labor says employment was 1.68 million, down 11,500 jobs from November. Connecticut has lost about 29,300 jobs since December 2007.

The unemployment rate rose to 7.1 percent, up from 6.6 percent in November. The national rate is 7.2 percent.

Rising job losses resulted from the worsening recession, but the numbers also reflect what state labor officials call a large revision in the November estimate.

The revision, they said, is intended to better align state and national employment numbers.

Employment declines were greatest in construction; trade, transportation and utilities; and leisure and hospitality.
