Union Flying High at Sikorsky

Sikorsky Aircraft has reached a new deal with its 6,000 union workers.

The Teamsters Local 1150 approved the five-year contract Sunday.

The contract includes a 3.5 percent bump in pay each year of the first three years and then will receive 4 percent raises each of the last two years, the Connecticut Post reports. It also includes a $3,000 signing bonus this year and an additional bonus of $2,000 in the third year, increases in pension and 401K contributions and flexibility with vacation and personal time.

The contract also allows Teamsters to use the Teamsters prescription benefits plan beginning in 2010, which will reduce some prescription coverage costs, the Connecticut Post reports.

Other health care costs, however, will increase.

The Connecticut and Florida contract become effective Monday. Local 1150 also represents 600 Sikorsky workers in Alabama, whose contract with the company expires in October.

“Sikorsky workers are some of the most skilled workers in the country and deserve the best compensation possible, strong health care and pension benefits and job security,” U.S. Rep Rosa L. DeLauro said in a news release issued Sunday. “I am pleased, especially in these tough economic times, that company and union officials were able to negotiate a new contract that will benefit both parties. Given the $13 billion order backlog and a continued demand for the Black Hawk Helicopter, having a new contract was critical and workers will continue to build the specialized product associated with the Sikorsky label.”
