Hop a Flight to the Mile-High City

Southwest is expanding its non-stop service from Bradley International Airport.

If you've been thinking about taking a ski trip to the west later this winter, Southwest Airlines just made it a little easier.

Beginning on March 14, the discount airline will begin non-stop service between Bradley International and Denver, Colorado. The intro fare is $79.

Airport officials said they sense the recession is over and passenger levels are “less negative,” meaning passenger traffic is down from a year ago but up month-to-month.

In case Denver's not your dream getaway, it might be a way to get where you want to be. Denver International Airport is 183 miles from Aspen and 121 miles from Vail. There will be one flight per day, Sunday through Friday, and two flights on Saturdays.

That's good news for sports fans. In March, the Broncos season will be over, but in April, the Mets head west to play the Colorado Rockies. Coors Field just happens to be 25 miles from the airport.

If skiing or sports aren’t your thing, Denver has art museums, outdoor cafes and hot air balloon rides.

The addition of flights from Bradley International Airport comes as airport officials have been trying to revive coast-to-coast service and overseas flights. On Wednesday, the airport said two airlines were adding flights from to four warm-weather destinations.

Delta Airlines plans to revive the Cancun, Mexico route in November. It’s also adding flights to Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers, Florida.

In addition to the Denver flights, Southwest is increasing service to Tampa and Baltimore next spring.

More than 6.1 million passengers used Bradley in 2008, most travelers were from Connecticut and Massachusetts.
