ESPN, Mill Cut Jobs

More jobs are disappearing from Connecticut.

ESPN in Bristol plans to cut 200 jobs in the next year, most of which are unfilled. A top executive told employees that he's instituting a hiring freeze and won't give any raises to top executives. The cuts, like so many at other companies, come because of a worsening economy.

The Warren Corporation, in Stafford, has laid off about a third of the employees at its woolen and fabric mill.

According to the state Labor Department, 57 employees were let go Tuesday.

The Warren Corporation blamed the economic downturn and its affect on the textile business in the United States as the reason for the layoffs.

Unemployment claims for the two-week period ending Jan. 24 averaged 93,654, according to the state Department of Labor.
