Downsizing Tribal Government

Layoffs May Follow Hundreds of Employee Buyouts

In these tough economic times, the Mashantucket Pequot tribe is looking to downsize.

Nearly 40 percent of tribal government employees said they will take a severance package, according to the Day of New London.

A tribal spokesperson said 286 employees accepted the packages, but the tribe said workers would still be laid off if necessary.

The tribe will now determine which employees to let go, the Day reports.

”It depends on whether they're providing essential government functions - we're not going to eliminate the fire department,” Potter said. “That's the process we're in now.”

Affected employees will be notified by the end of the year.
