Carbon Monoxide Sends 10 to Hospital

A gas-powered generator was to blame, according to fire officials.

Fire officials say 10 people, including a child, fell sick at a Bridgeport apartment house after they were exposed to potentially deadly levels of carbon monoxide.

The victims were taken to the hospital, but several were released by midday Saturday and everyone was expected to survive.

Fire officials said emergency workers were called to a house at 232 Madison Avenue late Friday because of an unconscious child.

A few hours later, they were back at the building after several people fell ill.

Officials say firefighters evacuated the building after they detected carbon monoxide levels that were high enough to be deadly after four hours of exposure.

They say the carbon monoxide was coming from a gas-powered generator in the basement, which they shut down. The generator had been running for eight days, since power had been shut off to the home, according to fire officials.
