10 People Displaced After Fire at Multi-Family Home in Manchester

Ten people, including seven children, are displaced after a two-alarm fire at a multi-family home in Manchester on Monday morning.

Firefighters said a tenant called 911 around 8:45 a.m. to report a kitchen fire due to unattended cooking on a stove at a duplex on Glenwood Street. Residents said the fire started while cooking with grease.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames and smoke was visible from miles away, fire officials said.

Firefighters entered the building and confirmed nobody was inside. While inside, they discovered the fire had burned up through the kitchen ceiling and through the second floor, fire officials said.

The fire chief said a woman fell asleep while cooking and saw flames when she woke up, called 911 and rushed her teenage son out of the house.

The family was upset and the son said there was no time to save their belonging. The first concern was making sire the neighbors, who have small children, got out and to safety.

There was heavy fire and water damage to the right side of the duplex and heavy smoke damage to the left side. The house is uninhabitable until repairs can be made, according to firefighters.

The American Red Cross and Manchester Social Services are assisting the families, which firefighters said includes eight children.

Glenwood and Ashwood Streets were blocked while firefighters worked to put out hot spots.

No injuries were reported.
