105 to Lose Jobs at New Haven Register

The paper is closing its printing operation and will now be printed by the Hartford Courant.

The New Haven Register plans to lay off more than 100 workers when the paper closes its printing operation in March.

The Register's publisher, Tom Wiley, sent a letter to the state Department of Labor last week as a notification of the planned job cuts, according to the New Haven Independent.

"This is to notify you that the Journal Register East, Inc. has developed plans to permanently cease its newspaper print production operations," Wiley's letter stated.

The job cuts will begin on or about Mar. 5, and approximately 105 employees will lose their jobs.

The Register announced last year that its paper would be printed by the Hartford Courant at the Courant's Hartford plant.

With the closing of the Register's printing operation at its plant on Sargent Drive, the company plans to sell the facility and move its reporters and editors to new offices in New Haven or elsewhere, the Independent reported.
