Vernon Center Middle School Student Killed in Crash on I-84: Police

NBC Universal, Inc.

An 11-year-old Vernon girl has died after a crash on Interstate 84 on Thursday night, according to state police.

State police said the two-vehicle crash happened around 8:17 p.m. on I-84 East near exit 67 in Vernon.

The 11-year-old Vernon girl, Jaidyn Bolduc, was sitting in the back seat when the crash happened and she was transported to Rockville General Hospital to be treated for serious injuries and was pronounced dead when she arrived at the hospital, according to state police.

School officials said she was a sixth-grade student at Vernon Center Middle School.

"It is with deep regret that I inform you that one of our students passed away due to a motor vehicle accident. Jaidyn Bolduc, a sixth grader at Vernon Center Middle School, lost her life. This is a terrible tragedy for the family and our community. Jaidyn will be sadly missed," Dr. Joseph Macary, superintendent of schools in Vernon, said in a statement.

"Jaidyn was a kind and considerate student and was involved in cheerleading. Her teachers said she was a pleasure to have in class," the statement goes on to say.

Macary said grief counseling services are available at Vernon Center Middle School to work with students and staff.

"She was kind. She was considerate. Her teacher said she was a joy to have, a pleasure to have in class," said Joseph Macary, Vernon superintendent of Schools.

"It’s hard. It’s hard, one day she’s in your classroom, the next day she’s not," he added.

The driver and the front-seat passenger in the vehicle were brought to Hartford Hospital.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Rockville General Hospital and later released, state police said.

"The Town of Vernon joins with Vernon Public Schools in mourning the passing of Vernon Center Middle School student Jaidyn Bolduc, who was fatally injured last night in a motor vehicle accident on I-84," Vernon Town Administrator Michael Purcaro said a statement. "We are deeply saddened and heartbroken as a community and offer our condolences to Jaidyn’s family and friends. "

He said Vernon firefighters, EMTs, and police assisted the State Police and were joined by first responders from Tolland, East Windsor, ASM Ambulance, and Life Star as part of a coordinated, multi-jurisdictional effort.

"We did everything we could, I know our fire, police, ems, our partners from neighboring towns were there assisting the state police and did everything they could to heroically save Jaidyn and treat the injured that were there on scene last night," Purcaro said.

He said critical incident stress management services are available to first responders through Vernon EMS.

State police are investigating the crash and ask anyone with information to call Trooper Hyatt at 860-896-8004.
