Socialite: $11,000 Stolen Scarf Was an Accident

New York socialite says she walked off with it by accident

The New York City socialite accused of stealing an $11,000 scarf from a Greenwich boutique, said it was all a mistake.

Beata Boman appeared in state Superior Court in Stamford on Monday and her lawyer said she will apply for accelerated rehabilitation - a special program for nonviolent first offenders - reports the Greenwich Time.

Boman's lawyer said she was distracted while shopping at Richards in Greenwich on June 13.

She was apparently on the phone with a friend who was about to undergo brain surgery and left the store without noticing the mink-trimmed Lori Piano stole was in her purse, the Time reports. He claims she was on her way back to Richards to return the scarf when she was arrested, according to the paper.

Boman is charged with first-degree larceny. If she is approved for accelerated rehabilitation, she would be placed on probation and the charges would be dropped after she completes the terms with no further arrests.

After being charged, Boman apparently attended a gala in New York, the amFar Inspirational Gala, according to photos that ran in society pages.

Her next scheduled court date is Aug. 8.
