Police Release Names of Men Killed in New Haven Crash

Two people were killed in an early morning car crash in New Haven, and speed and wet road conditions might have been factors, police said.

Police identified the driver as John Stewart Jr., 31, of West Haven, and the passenger as David Albert Gay, 26, of New Haven. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

An officer on patrol saw the Mercedes Benz apparently speeding on Webster Street at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday and turned around to pull the vehicle over.

Seconds later, he came upon the crash scene in which the car had wrapped itself around a tree.

Both men were pronounced dead.

“(It is) definitely one of the top five worst accidents that I have seen,” Sgt. Chris Rubino, of New Haven Police, said.

The crash remains under investigation.
