Seven people, including two children, were injured in a seven-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 South in Branford on Monday afternoon and a 12-year-old girl's injuries are severe, state police said.
State police said six vehicles had slowed down or stopped near exit 54 around 1:17 p.m., but a box truck did not stop and caused a chain reaction crash.
“We had multiple injured parties, some of whom were critically injured, trapped in their vehicles,” Deputy Chief Michael Stackpole said in a statement.
Firefighters from the Branford and East Haven fire department worked to extricate the patients from their vehicles and additional patients were treated and transported to area hospitals.
“It took our crews nearly 25 minutes to extricate one of the seriously injured pediatric patients from the vehicle she was riding in,” Stackpole said.
Seven patients were transported from the scene and four refused medical treatment at the scene.
A 12-year-old girl sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital. Police have identified her as Reilly Traynor.
