NY FBI to Review 2005 Cruise Ship Death of Conn. Honeymooner

The New York FBI is reviewing the 8-year-old case of a Greenwich, Conn. newlywed who disappeared on his honeymoon cruise in 2005.

George Allen Smith IV of Greenwich was celebrating his marriage with a cruise on a Royal Caribbean ship when he vanished somewhere between Greece and Turkey. His body never has been found.

The FBI in Connecticut has investigated Smith's disappearance, but no one has been charged.

His father, George Smith Sr., said Monday that the family was elated that the New York FBI is looking at the case again. Smith's mother says the search for answers has been a neverending nightmare.

"The last eight years have been horrific actually," Maureen Smith said. "Not only losing our son, trying to find out what happened to him."

Smith's disappearance followed a night of heavy drinking. The cruise line said his wife was found passed out on a floor far from their cabin.

The family has always believed Smith was murdered. Evidence, including bloodstains in the cabin and loud sounds heard that night, indicate foul play, they say.

The family's attorney says video shot by four men who were last seen in George Smith's room is now in the hands of the FBI.

The lawyer says at the end of the tape, one of the men flashes a gang sign. The family is convinced that the four men know something about Smith's death and are hopeful the New York FBI will find the truth.

They say George Smith's memory is what keeps them going.
