After more than two decades on the lam, a convicted murderer is back in a Connecticut prison.
Adam Zachs, 47, did not speak a word during a brief appearance on Thursday and Judge David Gold said the sentence was long overdue.
He had fled to Mexico in 1989 as he was appealing a 1988 conviction for a 1987 murder in West Hartford.
Authorities got a tip and ended Zachs' 22 years of being on the run on Feb. 1 when they captured him outside his home in Leon Guanajuto. He's been in prison in Mexico City ever since he was captured, but recently waived extradition.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Service and West Hartford Police traveled to Mexico to bring Zachs back to Connecticut. And they arrived on a flight from Mexico City hours before the hearing.
He was sentenced to 60 years in prison after a jury convicted him of shooting and killing Peter Carone in 1987 after getting into an argument over the NCAA basketball tournament at the Prospect Cafe.
On a related note, Zachs father, Frederick is scheduled to be sentenced later this summer for helping his son escape and remain on the run for so long.
