Police Seek Help as They Investigate Fatal New Haven Crash

New Haven police are asking for the public's help as they investigating a crash that killed two people and critically injured a third when the vehicle hit a New Haven building Friday night.

The car, which was carrying three people, slammed into a telephone pole and then into a building on Howard Avenue, killing the driver, 24-year-old Jose Lugo, and 50-year-old passenger Antonia Sanchez, both of New Haven, authorities said.

Another passenger, 30-year-old Erika Colon, of Waterbury, was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition.

The accident happened at the intersection of Howard and Congress avenues. According to police, the driver was stopped at a light next to a police cruiser on Sylvan Avenue. The car turned in front of the officer, nearly striking the patrol car, according to authorities.

Investigators said the officer beeped and the car took off down Howard Avenue. A few blocks later, the car slammed into an unoccupied storage building used by Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Police are investigating whether slick road conditions and speed may have been factors.

They are asking anyone with information about the crash to call investigators at 230-946-6304.
