Powder in Mail Sends 4 to Hospital

Officials say this is as a precaution

Three people had been quarantined in the Manchester Board of Education building after someone opened a suspicious envelope in the mail room.

One person who was sorting mail on Wednesday morning opened an envelope addressed to a teacher and a powdery substance came out, officials said. Four people were taken to local hospitals as a precaution, Supt. Dr. Kathleen Ouellette said.

Three people who were in the mail room were isolated because authorities are not sure what the envelope contained.

No one is reportedly ill and the state Department of Environmental Protection was called, as was the superintendent.

DEP officials said they conducted field tests, and based on the results of those tests, contacted law enforcement authorities.

Manchester is one of many school districts closed on Wednesday because of snow. It should be open on Thursday, Ouellette said.
