15 Sick from Heat at New Britain High Graduation

The illnesses are reported to be minor.

Fifteen people were brought to the hospital to be treated from heat-related illnesses during the New Britain High School graduation on Wednesday.

Several people in the crowd were taken from the stadium at Willow Brook Park to the Hospital of Central Connecticut to be treated for dehydration and heat exhaustion. Others received care at the stadium.

Many of them have been released from the hospital and they are all expected to be OK.

The fire department set up a misting station and emergency workers distributed water to help people tolerate the heat.

The principal said the event was too large to postpone.

Water was provided for all of the speakers and graduates and we were told no students suffered heat-related problems.

Other schools have graduations tonight and Enfield High School is asking people to bring water and wear loose-fitting clothing.

They are also urging people with physical conditions made worse by extreme heat to stay home.
