The 15-year-old boy who died in a Hamden crash yesterday has been identified as Tyseem Troutman, a football player at Hamden High School, according to the school principal and grief counselors will be at school today.
Hamden High School Principal Gary Highsmith said Troutman was a new student who had just moved from North Carolina.
The principal said he thinks Troutman was a sophomore.
The fatal crash happened on Dixwell Avenue at Lexington Street when a Volkswagen driving southbound crossed the center line and hit a Honda driving northbound, authorities said.
Troutman was riding in the Volkswagen, along with a 27-year-old man from Hamden, who received facial injuries in the crash but was not otherwise hurt, police said.
The driver of the Honda, a 31-year-old man, suffered back and chest injuries, according to police.
Store surveillance video caught the violent collision and titnesses said it happened when the Volkswagen driver tried to pass other vehicles and drive over the centerline.
"There were two cars already in the lane, so he tried to go into the other lane, and when he went into the other lane, there was a Honda going this way, so he turned. The Honda was coming 40 miles, 50 miles, whatever it was coming at, and then it was, like, the accident," Arslan Younas, if Smokers Discount World, said.

Police said speed might have been a factor and that the driver of the Volkswagen could be facing charges. The investigation is ongoing and police are looking into whether a third vehicle was involved.
The victims' names won't be released until their families are notified. Three people were taken to Yale-New Haven hospital, according to police.
The road was closed for a time but reopened around 11:30 a.m.
This is the second crash to kill a Hamden High School student in a month.
A 17-year-old Hamden High School student was killed in a crash on Aug. 12 in North Haven.
