4 Local Students Participate in Spelling Bee

Students from Clinton, Danbury, Oakdale and South Windsor will participate.

Four students from Connecticut are taking part in the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland this week.

Rahul Malayappan, 12, of Danbury, is an eighth grader at Broadview Middle School in Danbury. He participated in the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee, placing 33 in 2010.

Kitty Shortt, 11, is a fifth grade student at Abraham Pierson Elementary School in Clinton.

Lily Wang, 10, is a fifth grader at Oakdale Elementary School in Oakdale.    

Sairah Sheikh, 11, is a sixth grader at Timothy Edwards Middle School in South Windsor. She participated in the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The round one test takes part on Tuesday and all 278 spellers will take a computer spelling test. Those scores will be combined with rounds two and three on Wednesday to choose the semifinalists.

The semifinals and finals will happen on Thursday.
