78-Year-Old Man Surrenders After Hours-Long Standoff in Deep River

Connecticut State Police say a 78-year-old man is in custody after a more than three-hour standoff with police in Deep River.

Police went to Lindsay Smith's home on Saturday to serve an arrest and weapons risk warrant stemming from an incident last week. But authorities say Smith, who was known to possess guns, refused to leave his home.

According to state police, Smith was aware of the warrants and had made threatening comments previously to law enforcement about the pending execution of those warrants.

Members of the Connecticut state police emergency services unit negotiated with Smith for several hours before he agreed to surrender peacefully.

Authorities said numerous weapons were seized from the home.

Smith has been charged with breach of peace and is being held on 250,000 surety bond pending a court appearance on Monday. It was not immediately known if he had legal representation.
