9 More Local Friendly's Close

The restaurant and ice cream chain had already closed 7 stores.

Just months after closing seven Friendly’s sites in Connecticut, nine more closed on Sunday.
Friendly’s said the company was not able to restructure lease agreements and closed the following stores at the end of the business day on Sunday.

  • Branford: Leetes Island Road
  • Clinton: West Main Street
  • Glastonbury: Main Street
  • Manchester: Spencer Street
  • Middletown: Washington Plaza
  • North Haven: Washington Avenue
  • Norwich: West Main Street
  • Wallingford: North Colony Road
  • Waterbury: Watertown Avenue

The company released a statement saying that it tried to work with our landlords to restructure lease arrangements where they believed “rents did not reflect current market conditions and were significantly impacting the viability of underperforming restaurants.”

After filing for bankruptcy in October, the company said it would close locations in:

  • Guilford: Boston Post Road
  • Manchester: Buckland Mall
  • Meriden: Main Street
  • Storrs: Storrs Road/University Plaza
  • Torrington: E. Main Street
  • Waterbury: Waterbury Shopping Plaza
  • West Hartford: South Main Street

Friendly's blamed "the challenges of the current economic downturn, significantly increased costs, particularly in commodities such as cream, rents that exceed current market rates and certain of the Company's current unrelated liabilities."
