AIDS Rally at State Capitol

Hundreds of people with HIV and AIDS will gather at the Connecticut state capitol Wednesday for a rally aimed at raising awareness about the epidemic in this state.

The eighth annual AIDS Awareness Day on Wednesday is being sponsored by the Connecticut AIDS Resource Coalition. The group is fighting a proposed $3 million cut to state programs that help people with HIV and AIDS.

Nationally, an estimated 25 percent of those living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, don't know it.

A 2006 Connecticut Department of Public Health report estimates there are nearly 19,000 people living with HIV or AIDS in the state but fewer than 11,000 people have been reported and are currently listed in the state's registry.
