Psych Check Ordered for Mom Accused of Killing Baby

The Stamford woman accused of killing her newborn son last week will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

A judge ordered the evaluation for Angelina Sarmiento, 25, Tuesday.

Police arrested Sarmiento last week after they found the hours-old baby boy in a trash bin outside her home.

She gave birth to the baby inside the home, then put him in a plastic bag and into a closet, police said. When he would not stop crying, she stabbed him, police said.

The judge ordered the psychiatric tests to determine whether Sarmiento can understand the nature of the charges against her, and if she is capable of assisting her attorney in her defense.
