Advocates Protest Planned Deportation of Connecticut Couple NBCConnecticut.com

Immigrant advocates have rallied in Connecticut to protest the planned deportation of a couple who have been in the U.S. for nearly 20 years and have two children who are American citizens.

Demonstrators outside Hartford's federal courthouse called Friday for federal officials to halt the deportation of Xiang Jin Li and Zhe Long Huang, a Farmington couple ordered to return to China on Feb. 16 under the Trump administration's tougher immigration policies.

A federal immigration official didn't immediately return a message to the Associated Press Friday.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said the deportation would be cruel and un-American.

The couple has no criminal records. They entered the country illegally in 1999.

They have been considering whether to leave their two sons, ages 5 and 15, with friends in the U.S.
