Aetna is cutting more than 400 jobs in Connecticut.
The Hartford-based insurance giant announced on Thursday it will eliminate the positions through a voluntary early retirement offer, according to the Hartford Courant.
The move is part of Aetna's plan to reduce the company's worldwide workforce.
More than 1,700 employees, about 5 percent of Aetna's global workforce, are participating in the retirement program that begins Friday, the paper reported.
The company said the reduction was necessary because membership in its commercial health plan is down, according to the Courant. The early retirements will reduce Aetna's Connecticut workforce to 6,700.
