A dog had been moved from the Waterford-East Lyme animal shelter to the shelter in New London after pipes froze during this cold spell.
A post on the Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control Facebook page says the water pipes are completely frozen somewhere underground and animals will be staying with New London Animal Control “for the foreseeable future.”
In a phone call, animal control officials said one dog had to be relocated.
How to protect your home from pipes freezing:
- Aquarion Water Company warns that the pipes most likely to freeze are those close to an uninsulated wall, door, window, garage, attic, basement or along an uninsulated floor.
- To help prevent pipes from freezing, open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
- They also recommend adding insulation to exterior walls wherever possible. wrapping pipes with insulation and making sure all doors and windows to the outside are tightly closed.
- Let a faucet fed by pipes exposed to extremely cold weather drip to prevent the water inside from freezing.
- Turn on the water periodically at all faucets that are exposed to cold air when outside temperatures have been below freezing for several days.
