Another Arrest in New Haven Double Murder

Police apprehended the second suspect on Wednesday.

Police have made another arrest in connection with the murders of Marquis Sumler and Michael Fernandez at 24 Front St. in New Haven on Jan. 29, 2011.

New Haven Police and other members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force apprehended Eudell Scott McKinnie III, 26, on Davenport Avenue near Kossuth Street on Wednesday.

He was charged with assault in the first degree, robbery in the first degree, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal use of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, and reckless endangerment in the first degree.

He is being held on a $1.5 million court set bond.

Police previously arrested Samuel Mabry, a convicted felon, on a warrant in connection with the murders.

Officers said two men showed up at the house, looking for Fernandez, shot him in the chest and asked where his “quad” was, referring to an all-terrain vehicle, police said. After the man shot Fernandez, someone inside the house shot back.

At some point during the violent exchange, Sumler was hit, police said.

The Front Street home is known for drug dealing, police said, and neighbors went to police to express their concerns the day before the shooting happened.

Police said there are three outstanding arrest warrants for McKinnie for various charges with a total of $75,000 in court set bonds.
