Ansonia Man Dies in Early-Morning Fire

A 66-year-old Ansonia man was killed in an early-morning fire at his house, 2 Birchwood Drive.

Fire officials say Joseph Oliwa was home alone when the fire broke out around 5 a.m. on Sunday.

When firefighters arrived to Oliwa's home, they found his body by the kitchen door. It appeared he died from smoke inhalation.

Krisen Cable, Oliwa's goddaughter, described him as a great godfather who loved Ansonia.

Oliwa, who had retired, was a University of Connecticut graduate, the New Haven Register reports. He was an electrical engineer but had worked in sales in later years and worked occasionally as a substitute teacher since retiring.

The fire is under investigation.
