Ansonia Police Arrest Man Accused of Fighting With Officer

Ansonia police have arrested the man who carried a loaded gun in public and fought with an officer last Thursday, then ran from the scene.

Kelvin Whitehurst, 27, a convicted felon, was taken into custody Thursday. Officers spotted his car and tried to pull him over, but Whitehurst refused to stop and led officers on a chase down Route 8 southbound, according to police.

Police said Whitehurst crashed into a guardrail near exit 11, got out of the car and fled on foot. Officers chased him into the Burger King parking lot on Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton, where he was taken into custody.

A search of his car turned up cocaine and several cellphones, according to police.

He was charged with interfering with a police officer, assault on a police officer, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a pistol, carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle, theft of a firearm and escape with custody in connection with Aug. 14 incident.

Whitehurst was additionally charged with possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell, interfering with an officer, driving with a suspended license, failure to obey an officer’s signal, engaging police in pursuit and evading responsibility.

He was held on $350,000 bond and is due in court Friday.
