Dozens of Gravestones Overturned at Waterbury Cemetery

At least 87 gravestones were found overturned at a cemetery in Waterbury and cemetery officials are working to contact the families affected by the vandalism.

Many of the headstones knocked over at New St. Joseph's Cemetery on Prospect Road belonged to veterans, according to cemetery foreman James Poginy. The damage was discovered early Thursday morning.

Cemetery workers said it could be difficult to track down living relatives to let them know, since many of the graves are decades old. Poginy said the cost of the damage is still up in the air.

"Who is responsible for paying to repair these? These are personally owned monuments," he explained. "I mean, we'll fix what we can fix, and set every one if we can."

Now police are investigating, but Poginy said it could be tough to identify the culprit. Cemetery gates are open 24 hours and the property is not outfitted with surveillance cameras.
