Attorney: Mystic Man Died from Excessive Force

The attorney for the family of a Mystic man who died the same day he was arrested in Rhode Island said the death was the result of excessive police force.

According to a police report, a Westerly, Rhode Island officer hit Ryan O'Loughlin, 34, with his baton and used pepper spray outside Perks & Corks Bar, The Day of New London reports.

O'Loughlin was charged with disorderly conduct, The attorney told the Day there is no evidence that O'Loughlin suffered any injuries between the time of his arrest and when he was pronounced dead at the Pequot Medical Center in Groton later that same day.

The state Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner is expected to determine how O'Loughlin died by early September.

Westerly Police Chief Edward Mello said this week that the incident remains under investigation.
