Crash, Boom! Hartford Drivers are Bad

An insurance company says we are not great behind the wheel

The next time some jerk cuts you off or bumps into you, bite your tongue, take a breath and know that Connecticut is full of bad drivers. In fact, there are only three places in the country where drivers are worse than we are.

Out of 193 cities that Allstate Insurance polled for the fifth annual “Allstate America’s Best Driver’s Report,” Hartford ranked 190. That’s not good.

Hartfordites’ abilities on the road are even worse than they were last year, when the city ranked the sixth worst. In fact, your chance of a collision is 62.4 percent higher than the national average, according to the report.

The report rankings are based on car collision frequency, not courtesy. That’s a whole other story.

“We don’t want drivers in Hartford to be discouraged by their ranking. Instead, we hope the report will challenge drivers in Hartford to make positive changes to their driving habits that will in turn make the city a safer place to live, work and raise families,” Brett Ludwig, of Allstate Insurance, said.

But, we can’t just turn the spotlight on Hartford.

You also need to keep an eye out for your paint job in Bridgeport, where you are 30.8 percent more likely to crash than the national average and New Haven, where your fender-bender factor is 30.4 percent higher than average.

While Connecticut didn’t fare too well, there is always room for improvement. In case you are wondering, drivers from Sioux Falls, South Dakota maintained their status as the safety city in this year’s report for the fourth consecutive year.

Glendale, California; Baltimore, Maryland; and Washington, D.C. were the worst.
