Middletown Police are investigating after dead puppies were found in a bag on Sunday.

A couple out walking their dog found the bag on the side of Preston Avenue, a quiet street in a heavily wooded area, and contacted police just before noon to report what they found.

Investigators said the four puppies were approximately two weeks old and were black with some white on their chin, chest and feet. The puppies were all male and appeared to be a possible poodle or cocker spaniel mixed breed.

According to police, the puppies were transported to Pieper-Olson Veterinary Hospital, where they were examined and stored until they could be transported to the lab for a necropsy to determine the cause of death. Officials estimate the puppies had been dead for a few hours.

Police said the puppies would have been too young to adopt and should have stayed with their mother.

Middletown Animal Control officers are investigating the death of the puppies. Police said they are processing evidence from the scene.

Police said the person who left the puppies had several options, including bringing them to a vet, calling animal control or bringing them to police or the fire station.

If you know of a dog that just had puppies and they are no longer around, or if you have any other information, you're urged to contact Middletown Animal Control at (860) 638-4030.
