Bear Makes Visit to Horses in Woodbridge

A bear made a visit to some horses in Woodbridge Thursday.

Jim Brandt, the homeowner on Apple Tree Lane, told NBC Connecticut he first spotted the 200-pound bear when he came out to check on a spooked horse around 10 a.m. Brant said when he initially heard the commotion he thought their uninvited guest was a turkey.

"It’s a big horse but it’s afraid of turkeys...and just to see the bear was sort of surprising and shocking," Brandt said.

The bear later climbed a tree on his property and hung out until local police and state Environmental Conservation police responded and scared it off.

An hour or so later, the bear returned for a bath in the horses’ water trough. Brandt said he called police again, and they again chased the bear back into the woods.

"I was worried about him being aggressive, but he didn’t appear to be aggressive because he just was lumbering around," Brandt said.

According to the Brandt, the bear has also visited the police chief at his home and apparently lives in the area.
