Bear Sighting Near Southington High School Prompts Police Patrols

Southington High School students who walk home have been advised of a bear sighting in the area and are being given the option to stay at the school until police deem the area safe.

A bear was spotted in the 900 block of Pleasant Street in Southington, Southington Superintendent Timothy F. Connellan wrote in an advisory to parents.

Police are patrolling the area. High school "walkers" have been informed and school officials told them they "can remain at school until police determine it safe or have parents pick them up at school."

School officials have alerted the New Britain Transportation school bus company and drivers will return to the high school if they see anything suspicious, Connellan said.

Police will be patrolling the area until all buses have finished their routes in the nearby neighborhoods, he said.
